about
I’ve grown frustrated with people telling me that fear and faith are diametrically opposed. This has not been my experience; in fact, oftentimes fear makes sense out of my faith. This past year I realized that there are a lot of things I am afraid of, and that those things are naturally to be feared. Fear isn’t intrinsically bad or good, and fear cannot be separated from its object. One of the greatest things I fear is the great mystery, the great paradox, of divinity. The prospect of finitude is fearful as is the prospect of infinity. But in that space of fear, I feel a sense of beauty; I feel as though I appreciate the world around me more, and my love means more, and the beautiful things are so much more beautiful because of this fearful mystery. And so, one snowy day, looking out my kitchen window, I wrote a song about that fear.
lyrics
I saw you
At least, I think,
In the backyard
At the window of the kitchen sink
It was cold out
So I turned the water warm
And I stood there
Watching snow fall for minutes or more
And I smile with my teeth showing ear to ear
As the world freezes over at the start of the year
Like the Garden of Eden with a salty veneer
And I have so much love for all my deepest fears
I saw you
In a pine tree taller than the rest
She was dancing
Twirling around in a lily white dress
I don’t get you
Is there logic for the things that you do?
So I’m fearful
In a way that just enhances the view
And I smile with my teeth showing ear to ear
And I dance with the pine tree with the snow in her tears
You must think I’m a freak while you’re standing right here
I guess my love is mixed with infinite fear
